Things to do in New York

Manhattan is the oldest, smallest and most densely-populated of the five boroughs of New York City. A borough is a unique form of government that administers the five fundamental constituent parts of the consolidated city. Technically, under New York State Law, a "borough" is a municipal corporation that is created when a county is merged with the cities, towns, and incorporated villages within it.

Chartering a Yacht in Greece - Things to Consider

When to Go

The sailing season in Greece lasts from March to early November. During the Spring months, the weather during the day varies from cool to warm and is usually cool at night. The sea temperature is not usually suitable for swimming until the middle of May and then you can swim right through to the middle of October. The months of May, June, September and October usually have warm to hot daytime temperatures and pleasant temperatures at night. There are good winds at this time, but they are often variable. In July and August there are stronger winds, particularly in the Cyclades islands. Spring and Autumn are the most popular seasons for yacht chartering in Greece because this is when the climate is most suitable and there are far fewer tourists on the mainland and on the islands, than there are in high Summer.

Deciding on the Type of Charter

There are many options to choose from and when planning your trip you should consider the following questions. How many people will be in your party and will they require single or double berths aboard? Do you require a sailing yacht, a motor yacht or a motorsailer? What level of comfort do you want aboard? Will you require a skipper? If you require a bareboat (i.e. you intend to do the sailing yourself, without skipper or other professional crew aboard), what size of yacht are you experienced in handling? Remember that European regulations, require that two qualified people be aboard. Another option is to sail in a group or flotilla of other boats. These can be a combination of bareboat and skippered yachts, and can provide you with the right balance of educational support and local knowledge.

Length of Trip

In order to get the most out of a yacht charter, the minimum length of trip should be about 7 days. As for the maximum amount of time, that is up to you. Many companies will offer discounts for longer charters. Good charter companies will have lots of local knowledge on the best routes and places to visit, and will work with you to agree an itinerary, which suits your needs. Remember that you do not have to spend all of your time aboard the boat. You could arrange a couple of days at the beginning at the end of your charter to explore the mainland. It is well worth spending at least two or three days in Athens, which unfortunately is often side-stepped by people who visit Greece and head straight for the islands.

The Truth About Youth Hostels

How youth hostels provide the magic power to surprise almost everybody. Here is the little known (yet true) story of the origin of hostels.

In August 1909 the German teacher Richard Schirrmann had been caught in a violent thunderstorm on an eight day migration with his pupils and found accommodation in a barn by a farmer.

While the pupils were sleeping, Schirrmann was laying awake the whole night.

The thought attacked him suddenly, ?One would have to create places, at which move-joyful young people and pupils receive a safe and inexpensive overnight stay?.

He published this idea for the first time in 1910 in an essay about ?Voksschuelerherbergen? ("elementary school pupil lodgings"),

"?also the boys and girls of the common man must practice fresh merry moving as counterweight for the room stool time of their school years... how do I imagine now appropriate and sufficient lodgings for the enormous army of the elementary school pupils?... each city and nearly each village has an elementary school, which almost waits in holidays with empty areas for it, into a sleep and a dining hall for move-merry children to be transformed. Two classrooms are sufficient, one for boys, one for girls. The banks are set partly one above the other. That gives free area for the list of 15 beds. ... each camp place consists of a tautly with straw plugged bag and cushion, 2 sheets and a blanket... each child is stopped to bring its camp place back in order finely neat... "

After publication of this essay in the "Koelnische Zeitung? (Cologne Newspaper) numerous money and gift contributions in kind and support offers came from whole Germany.

In 1912 the first youth hostel was opened in the Altenia Castle, Germany

The first youth hostel was arranged according to Schirrmann?s plans: 2 sleeping halls with 3-storied solid wood beds, a dayroom, kitchen, wash and shower rooms. First hostel warden was Richard Schirrmann. He lived directly above the hostel rooms. In the same year Schirrmann also published the first hostel listing with approximately 140 addresses.

In many of these lodgings however were not even basics of accommodations, e.g. for girls were nothing at all.

In 1913 were already 301 youth hostels in cities and villages. One year later one counted already 535.

In 1920 the first expenditure of the "youth hostel" magazine appeared, and with approximately 700 addresses the first manual with addresses by youth hostels were published.

From 1924-1929 with the first lottery in favour to the youth hostels 1.5 million realm Marks were gained. In 1932 had already been 2,123 youth hostels in Germany. More than 4.5 million overnight stays took place. But at the end of the twenties in further countries, like Poland, Holland, France, England, and Switzerland, more than 600 youth hostels were already opened.

On October 20th, 1932 in Amsterdam in presence by land agencies from Switzerland, Czechoslovakia, Poland, the Netherlands, Norway, Denmark, Great Britain, Ireland, France, and Belgium, the International Youth Hostel Federation (IYHF) was created.

The federation has its seat today in Welwyn Garden City near London. Richard Schirrmann was selected as the president. Conference language was German.

On the following conference in 1933 also Isabel and Monroe Smith from the USA participated. Within one year they could open thirty youth hostels in the United States. Also in 1933 the national socialists arrived in Germany at power.

All political and religious youth combinations were dissolved and replaced by a system of obligatorily university-formed youth organization, under the line of the "realm youth guidance". Richard Schirrmann must withdraw as a chairman of the German youth hostel factory.

He let himself impress by the idealistic elements of the new movement and became honorary president of the realm federation for German youth hostels. A decision which he should bitterly repent later.

In 1936 for political reasons it had come to the break with the international youth hostel federation. In 1947 after the end of the world war, 247 youth hostels with 1,158,500 overnight stays were counted again in Germany.

From 1949-1990 also in the GDR were an extensive network of youth hostels developed. Initially still led as federations, these later had become to state led institutions of the youth. The existing federations were dissolved. In 1960 were the most youth hostels in the Federal Republic. More than 720 houses realized 11,300,312 overnight stays.

In 1990 after the end of the GDR also in the new Lands of the Federal Republic youth hostel federations were created. In November these federations joined the German youth hostel association.

Youth hostels today

World-wide there are more than 4,000 youth hostels in 65 countries, whereby more than 600 alone in Germany.

The youth hostels in Germany offer to their guests far more than an inexpensive overnight stay. Beside small cosy old buildings or the experience in castles and residences you also find many houses in scenic delightful environments as well as in large cities. For more details go to http://www.smart-travel-germany.com/hostels-germany.html .

This true story was published in German language by the German Youth Hostel Association, and translated by Marcus Hochstadt.

On Foot in the Faroe Islands

In July 2003 my partner and I spurned the soaring temperatures of our native Britain and headed north, to a collection of Danish islands in the North Atlantic: the Faroe Isles.

We booked the trip with Explore Worldwide, a small package-tour operator specialising in small-group holidays off the beaten track. (And you can't get much more off the beaten track than the Faroes!)

So why go to the Faroe Islands? In short - three reasons:

#1 The scenery is stunning. Fantastic fjords and cliffs, tiny villages and picturesque buildings.

#2 The walking. Both Emma and I enjoy our walking - and the tour we picked is called "On Foot in the Faroes". We walked most days.

#3 It's off the beaten track. Neither Emma nor I know anyone else who's been to the Faroes - so that's certainly reason to go!

And yes, we got very wet in the Faroe Isles. We rarely saw the sun, but as we were properly dressed and it was what we expected, it didn't matter.

Highlights of the trip included:

#1 A boat-trip to the Vestmanna bird cliffs, which the Faroese actually scale to get bird eggs (which they eat).

#2 Walking from Oyndarfjordur to Elduvik (where we had lunch) and then walking to Funningsfjordur. Fantastic scenery!

#3 Staying at the hostel in Gjogv. Great atmosphere and really relaxed.

Saksun village, which is just so picturesque (see the photo at the top of this page).

Our top tips for the Faroe Islands are:

#1 You can get free internet access in Torshavn public library. (The library is near the tourist information office, in the shopping area.)

#2 Pack extra pairs of underwear in case of delays. We were delayed two whole days in leaving because of fog at the airport.

#3 Take a deck of cards. Once you leave the Faroese capital of Torshavn, there really isn't much to do in the evening. Bars are non-existent, so you'll spend most of your evening (if the weather isn't good enough to go out exploring) in the hotel or hostel. So take a deck of cards to pass the time.

#4 You will get wet! Waterproof your walking trousers - even if you are taking overtrousers, the weather can change unexpectedly. (You can waterproof your clothes using Nikwax - available from most outdoor shops in the UK.)

#5 Take binoculars - the bird life is great.

#6 If you stay in the hostel at Gjogv, and you have a room, you can find the controls to the underfloor heating next to the toilet. Fantastic for drying out wet walking boots!

While I probably won't be going back to the Faroe Islands (I'm not sure how much more there is to see - you can pretty much "do" it in the week), I've no doubt we'll be off to other off-the-beaten-path places.

Museu de Cera, Ramblas

Local Name is Museu de Cera. The Museu de Cera is located at the port end of the Ramblas in a rather old-fashioned 19th C. building. The founder of the museum, Enrique Alarcon, a great cineast, has created an eerily beautiful display by means of regularly changing groups of more than 300 wax figures in all, although the characters represented are identifiable less by their physiognomic similarity than by their clothing and general atmosphere.

Teaching English In Greece - Things to Consider

The employment situation can be quite uncertain for newcomers to Greece and therefore many people choose to try teaching English as a foreign language, on a full or part-time basis. It can bring in a good income whether it is your preferred career choice, or you wish to do it short-term until another career choice pans out.

Qualifications and Experience

There are many language schools or frontistiria in Athens and all over Greece, to which you could apply for work. In order to get a job in one of these schools, it is still not strictly necessary to have a formal teaching qualification such as TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language). Often all that is required is a university degree (in any subject) from a UK or US university. That said, if you are uncertain about your ability to teach English and want to ensure that you start off in this line of work with the necessary skills, a course would be useful. It would provide you with some teaching theory, knowledge of English grammar (let?s face it, many of us have never formally studied English grammar in any great depth, even though we speak and write English everyday) and give you some valuable experience of teaching in a classroom, since this is included in most courses. When applying for jobs, you will find vacancies that specify that previous teaching experience is required and others for which no experience is necessary.

It does not matter if you do not speak a lot of Greek. Native English speakers are often valued for other reasons such as having what is seen as a ?proper? accent. Many people also swear by the approach of not speaking your students? language, so that they hear only English being spoken for the duration of the lesson. You will find ways to make yourself understood. In my experience of language teaching, it can even be counter-productive if your students know that you speak their language well, because they may be too easily tempted to speak to you in Greek when they find it hard going.

Finding work

Teaching English as a foreign language jobs are widely advertised in newspapers and on the Internet all year round and most often from August to October. As well as applying before in Greece, you can also go to door-to-door around the frontistiria with your CV, again in the August to October period. If you are visiting them in person, it is not recommended that you spend time doing this any earlier than August because the schools often do not consider their recruitment needs much before the beginning of the academic year.

Pay and working conditions

Pay and conditions offered by language schools will vary enormously, so it is important to check these out in detail first before accepting a contract. If time is on your side, it may be worth speaking to several schools rather than taking the first job you are offered. Also, if you work in a frontistirio it is quite likely that you will be working mainly in the afternoons and evenings, since this is when children and adults are free to take their lessons.

Making some extra money

Many people who teach English as a foreign language in a school, also do private English on the side and this can become a lucrative activity in itself. Working in a language school for a few months is a good way to meet students and advertise the fact that you do private English lessons, on a one-to-one basis. It can be difficult to get the first few, but then through word of mouth, you?ll get more if you do a good job ? that great social network of mums and dads on the school run can work wonders! The University of Cambridge ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) exam system seems to be the most widely known and respected in Greece, many people who want to be taught privately are preparing to sit a Cambridge exam or some other type of test. It is worth familiarising yourself with the system ? there is an enormous amount of free information on the Internet, including lesson plans, tips, exam practice etc. The exams which are most commonly sat by students are the "First Certificate in English" (which many people still refer to by its old name: "Lower"), "Certificate of Proficiency in English" (known as ?Proficiency?), and ?Certificate in Advanced English? (commonly referred to as ?Advanced?). More information is available from the Cambridge ESOL web site (www.cambridgeesol.org).

What private students will want from you varies a great deal. Some may just want a conversation class, others may just be starting on the Cambridge examinations path and there will be some who are already at a very high level and may need detailed coaching on specific grammar points or on vocabulary for a particular purpose e.g. business English. And given these differences, the amount of preparation required on your part and the fee per hour you are able to charge will probably vary too. I will finish with a word on advertising. My experience has been that I have paid out money for two newspaper ads, which got back zero replies! What has worked well for me is local advertising - you need to use your imagination. I put a card in local shops and a small notice in the back window of my car and you can see people reading it at every traffic light! Just beware of getting calls on your mobile phone while you're driving - not good! As I said before, word of mouth should kick in too once you have your first couple of lessons.

Beijing

Though Beijing is an ancient city, used as the capital by many warlords, yet its modern history as a capital begins in the Yuan dynasty (1271-1368) under Kublai Khan, the great grandson of Chengis Khan. BEIJING RESOURCES

Beijing comprises of plains, mountains, as well as hills. Inadequate water supply, poor quality of the soil and huge areas of rocky mountains does not favor farming and agriculture at all. Minerals such as iron and limestone are mined. The forest areas of Beijing are also reducing day by day- but the Beijing tourism is very prosperous.

BEIJING ECONOMY

Beijing, being the main centre of the political and cultural activity, Beijing is economically quite well developed. The per capital G.D.P. sums up to around 22,000 Yuan.

BEIJING LIFESTYLE

According to statistics, there are 6.14 million employees compared to 4.54 million workers. The education level is also quite high with 95% of the students, graduating from junior high school, entering senior high school.
