The Wings of the Sphinx, A Montalbano Mystery by Andrea Camilleri

I buy every Inspector Silvio Montalbano mystery as soon as they come out in the US even if it takes me awhile to review them. The Wings of the Sphinx is the 11th mystery by Andrea Camilleri featuring the Sicilian Inspector. In The Wings of the Sphinx, Montalbano must solve a rather grisly murder while still having relationship issues with his longtime, long distance love, Livia.

At 56 years old Montalbano is feeling his age. Much in this novel is familiar to readers of Camilleri?s past books: Montalbano is still savoring meals at Enzo?s as well as those fixed by his housekeeper, his conversations with desk sergeant Catarella are as confusing as ever and of course Montalbano still lives in the fictional town of Vigata where he is still enjoying long walks on the jetty. Camilleri continues to take undisguised swipes at Silvio Berlusconi. Though I would be inclined to miss many of the subtleties the author thoughtfully includes notes at the back of the book to help his non-Italian readers.

The mystery in The Wings of the Sphinx revolves around the discovery of the body of a young woman who has been shot in the face and left naked in the city dump. Montalbano leaves the scene of the crime as quickly as he gets there unable to deal with the death of yet another young victim. The book tackles the media?s obsession with subjecting us daily to stories of death and violence.

Ancient House in Pompeii Collapses

The recent collapse of a 2,000-year-old house in the ancient Roman city of Pompeii has once again highlighted the sad state of repair of many historic sites in Italy. The 430-square-foot house was used by gladiators to train before going to fight in a nearby amphitheater. The house was also used to store weapons and armor. The gladiator?s house was most likely built toward the end of Pompeii?s life and was partially destroyed in WWII after which it had undergone some repairs.

The only injury was perhaps to Italian pride at having one of its main tourist attractions make the news for the lack of upkeep by the government or private donors. The collapse of the house underscored a controversy in Italy over the lack of maintenance at Pompeii.

The office of Pompeii's archaeological superintendent said the collapse occurred Saturday, (November 13, 2010) at around 6 a.m. Attendants opening the site saw the collapse about an hour later.

The house located on Pompeii?s main street, called by the Latin name "Schola Armaturarum Juventis Pompeiani," was closed to the public, and could only be seen from the outside. It was not considered at risk of collapse, officials said.

Antonio Varone, director of Pompeii's excavations, told the ANSA news agency that officials were trying to "preserve up to the last fragment of the 'Schola Armaturarum."' The Culture Minister, Sandro Bondi, said some frescoes on the lower walls may have been preserved. Bondi called for greater funds for Pompeii, while the opposition was quick to blame the government.

There was no official word on possible causes. News reports said water infiltration following heavy rains in the past days might be the cause.

If you think back to your High School World History class you may recall that Pompeii was destroyed in A.D. 79 by an eruption of nearby Mount Vesuvius that killed thousands of people and buried the city in 20 feet (six meters) of volcanic ash. As deadly as the ash was, it gave Pompeii eternal life by preserving the ancient cities treasures. The preservation of Pompeii?s artifacts has provided much information about what life was like at the time of the eruption.

Sicily?s Mt. Etna Roars Back to Life

Mt. Etna, Europe?s tallest and most active volcano came to life on Wednesday night, January 12, 2011. The eruption lasted about 2 hours.

According to the Associated Press, the volcano spewed a cloud of ash into the air and sent streams of lava flowing down its slopes. No one was injured in the eruption and no damage has been reported.

Mt. Etna has been affecting life in Sicily for hundreds of years. Though damage from recent eruptions has been minor and the loss of life infrequent in modern times that has not always been the case. In 1185, Mt. Etna killed 15,000 people during an eruption. A 1669 eruption destroyed villages and turned the fields above Nicolosi into a lake of hot and smoldering lava that took eight years to cool. More than 20,000 people were killed. Mt. Etna has been thought to be active for around 500,000 years.

Mt. Etna has seen increased activity in recent months. According to the Italian Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology, a slight increase in Etna's volcanic tremors had been recorded on Tuesday, reaching its peak at 7am local time on Wednesday morning.< /p>
