The Aussie Pub is an icon in Australian culture. The term "pub" is derived from the British and Irish "public house", a drinking establishment which grew out of making a surplus of ale, and inviting the 'public' to come and drink it. An Aussie pub is more than just a drinking establishment however; typically they also offer meals and basic accommodation too. In the earliest days they were often the first building in a new town and were also the post office and the general store.
