The Risk of Poaching to Tourism in Africa

Poachers have significantly impacted the elephant populations in Africa. The decade before the 1989 ban in ivory trade, elephants in Africa numbered 1.3 million but dwindled to slightly over 500,000 after the ban. In a country such as Chad, hundreds of thousands of elephants have been killed, leaving a population of about 10,000.
